US CIVIL WAR
Thousands of old magazine articles were written about the cause of the U.S. Civil War. Magazines such as Century, Harpers and Munsey’s published articles about the battles, their generals and civil war weapons, and battle field casualties.
Cosmopolitan Magazine featured articles on American Civil War clothing, including dresses and bonnets, as well as civil war uniforms. They also wrote about women in the Civil War and the role they played in the conflict.
The U.S. Civil War erupted shortly after the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The roots of the war can be traced to the tensions between the North and South, specifically relating to the issues of states rights and slavery.
Shortly after the election, eleven southern states seceded and formed the Confederacy. The first two years of the war, 1861-1862, the South won many of the civil war battles. However after heartbreaking losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863, the North rallied to defeat the Southern troops, leading to their surrender in April 1865.
