1892 Washington Arch Construction New York City History Famous Landmarks Photo

This historic 118 year old ORIGINAL magazine cover was carefully removed from the Illustrated American Magazine, published in 1892.  Page size is 10x12?.  This is a old fabulous picture of the Washington Arch under construction in 1892, with horse-drawn traffic in the city.

In 1889, to celebrate the centennial of George Washington's inauguration as president of the United States, a large plaster and wood Memorial Arch was erected over Fifth Avenue just north of Washington Square Park. The temporary plaster and wood arch was so popular that in 1892 a permanent marble arch, designed by the New York architect Stanford White, was erected, standing 77 feet was built just inside the park. The inscription on the arch reads:

Let us raise a standard to which the wise and the honest can repair. The event is in the hand of God. ? Washington

Vintage illustrations include:
The Washington (Square) Arch, New York (cover)

Condition:  Good Condition with some light toning to the pages due to age
