19th Century America

The nineteenth century was an extraordinary time in American history. Probably the most compelling years dealt with the Civil War and the Reconstruction that followed.

The War Between the States, 1861-1865, was a brutal four-year conflict ending in the defeat of the South and the end of slavery. This cost our country more than a half a million lives.

The Gilded Age, 1887-1892 was a time of great industrial growth. Railroad development boomed as trains were needed to move western resources such as lumber and gold, eastward. The Gilded Age was named for the great fortunes that were created by such businessmen as John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie.

By the turn of the century, we moved into the The Progressive Era, a time of great social, political, economic and moral reform in America. Four Constitutional amendments were adopted during the Progressive era, which authorized an income tax, provided for the direct election of senators, extended the vote to women, and prohibited the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. These were very historic changes in the landscape of our country.
